The SWITCHBLADE multi-channel Coherent Wideband Digital Tuner consists of the Azure 6U or 3U VPX Digital Signal Processing Carrier Board. The 6U SWITCHBLADE supports up to 4 individual tuner daughter modules while the 3U has the capability to support 2 tuner daughter modules. Both SWITCHBLADE Digital Tuners are designed to be able to plug into a standard 1” pitch conduction cooled VPX chassis.

The SWITCHBLADE tuners can provide analog or digital IF outputs. Analog IF outputs are over the front panel and digital IF (VITA 49) outputs are available over the VPX data plane and expansion planes. Digital IF output can be resampled or decimated for lower sample rates as required. The data and expansion plane protocols are configurable for 10GbE, Aurora, PCIe 3.0, Infiniband, SRIO, 40GbE and other SERDES interfaces.

SWITCHBLADE provides runtime configurable coherency modes for spatial processing and DF. The FPGA and DSP resources can be configured at runtime to do other signal processing tasks other than the VITA 49 digital IF output, to include greater than 1000 narrowband IQ streams across 640MHz instantaneous bandwidth, N-channel DF processing, beamforming or a wideband high-dynamic range mode (single 640MHz BW output). Up to 2.4GHz IBW when using four 600MHz modules. 80MHz and 600MHz modules (RX and TX) can be mixed on a single card. Multiple SWITCHBLADE cards can be cascaded where more than 8-channel coherency is required.

Azure is constantly updating the capabilities of its SWITCHBLADE product line and is currently evolving the 2-channel 80MHz tuner module to a 20GHz 8-channel 160MHz IBW daughterboard as well as designing a 20GHz 4-channel transceiver daughterboard with 2GHz IBW per channel.

Azure’s SWITCHBLADE subsystems and associated components is a premier product family that provides fully-adaptive & coherent multi-channel sensing for spatial processing and direction finding (DF).

The SWITCHBLADE Signal Processing Board provides the foundation for an 8-channel RF signal acquisition and direction finding (DF) system in a single 6U VPX card. Four mezzanine sites are available for either 2-Channel 80MHz Receiver, 600MHz IBW Wideband Transmitter or Receiver to 18.3GHz.

The mezzanines are controlled by onboard Xilinx® Virtex-7™ FPGAs which also implement resampling and VITA 49 Digital IF. The FPGAs have been sized to allow for complex signal processing, to include RADAR pulse processing, beam-forming, detection, recognition and spatial DF. An onboard Keystone-II chip provides additional enhanced signal processing with its quad-core ARM processors and octal-core DSP processors.

The SWITCHBLADE 2-Channel Digital Tuner Module is a plug-in RF module for the SWITCHBLADE digital signal processing carrier board. The tuner is designed to plug into the SWITCHBLADE card as part of an 8-channel coherent system (Clocks, RF and IF LOs are phase aligned across all modules). Tuner channels can also be run independently to allow for 640MHz IBW single channel capability on one card.

Each 2-channel module provides two 240MSPS (JESD204B) digital outputs to the carrier board for further processing or decimation and transmission over the backplane as wideband digital IF (VITA 49).

Analog IF at 180MHz is also available for legacy systems and can be set to 160MHz with minor degradation in IBW if desired.

With multiple modules on a card, tuner channels can also be run independently to allow for up to 2.4GHz IBW of high dynamic range transmit capability on one 6U card.
600MHz TX modules, 600MHz RX modules and 80MHz 2-channel modules can be mixed on a single 6U or 3U SWITCHBLADE mainboard.
Each 600MHz module provides a 16-bit 1.4GSPS (JESD204B) digital input from the mainboard. The mainboard FPGA can ingest streaming VITA 49.2, ingest Receiver tuner data for signal processing and transmit or produce parametric signals for transmit. Customers can use the FDK to design their own waveform transmit capability.

The 16X 12 is a full non-blocking switch that can be controlled independently or directly by the SWITCHBLADE tuner for to provide seamless integration of multiple aperture inputs to tuners input channels. The Software allows for aperture ganging based on frequency for seamless aperture selection while scanning across multiple antennas and automatically adjusts the VITA49 stream to correctly report frequency for down-converted inputs. Array elements can also be ganged to ensure proper mapping of array elements to tuner channels when in coherent mode.
The switch can also provide output switching when transmitting across multiple apertures.

Two mezzanine sites are available. The top can support either a 2-Channel Tuner, Transmitter or single-channel 600MHz IBW Tuner with frequency coverage up to 18GHz. The bottom mezzanine supports a transmit module with 600GHz IBW and up to 18GHz frequency coverage.
